I observe the sand moving

as the water

springs up―

feeling its sadness deeply

shimijimi to

mizu waki ore ba

suna ugoku kana

 

 

死にしづむ火山のうへにわが母の乳汁(ちしる)の色のみづ見ゆるかな

in a volcano,

quiet as death,

I can see the water­―

its color,

my mother’s breast
